Faculty of Biology, Chemistry & Earth Sciences

How can energy be converted and used more efficiently? Can we preserve the environment and our natural resources in a sustainable way? What will be the next leap in information technology? The central questions of materials chemistry illustrate the kind of forward-looking topics addressed by our faculty.

Collaborative Research Centre 840 From Paticular Nanosystems to Mesotechnology is an interdisciplinary research unit funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).  Mesotechnology is a field that is set to revolutionize research in many different areas. It links nanotechnology and the macroscopic world, enabling the development of new hybrid and composite materials, to name just one example. No less spectacular are the experiments conducted at the Bavarian Research Institute of Experimental Geochemistry & Geophysics. The internationally renowned focus area High Pressure & High Temperature Research investigates what holds together Earth's core.

Millions in DFG grants

Over the past 30 years, the DFG has awarded the faculty's collaborative research centres numerous high-profile research grants. In terms of DFG grants, the research field of Polymer Chemistry at the University of Bayreuth and the University of Mainz were head and shoulders above any other German university.

Strong performance in university rankings

For our faculty, the latest CHE university rankings are cause for celebration. The ranking surveyed over 250,000 students, whose feedback secured the University of Bayreuth top positions in the subject areas biology, chemistry, and earth sciences. The study environment, supervision of students, and the well-equipped student laboratories are all rated high by our students.

Top notch in the biosciences and environmental sciences

The expert committee Wissenschaftsland Bayern 2020 confirmed the scientific excellence of the University of Bayreuth's research in the biosciences and environmental sciences.  Whatever you are planning to do at our faculty, an outstanding environment awaits you.
