​Der Lehrstuhl Biomaterialien beschäftigt sich u.a. mit der Entwicklung neuer Werkstoffe für unterschiedliche Anwendungen in der diagnostischen u. therapeutischen Medizin, wie z.B. Implantate/Devices, wirk­stoffhaltige Träger­systeme, Komponenten von medizintechnische Apparaturen und Hilfs­mittel, Oberflächen­behand­lungen und Beschichtungen.
Der Fokus des Lehrstuhls liegt in der Analytik, biotechnologischen Herstellung und Verarbeitung biologischer (Protein-basierter) Materialien, da diese oft die Eigenschaften von künstlich hergestellten übertreffen. Ein bekanntes am Lehrstuhl bearbeitetes Beispiel ist die Spinnenseide. Unter anderem werden rekombinant hergestellte Spinnenseidenproteine mit Hilfe unterschiedlicher verfahrenstechnischer Methoden in Morphologien wie zum Beispiel Filme, Gele, Schäume, Kapseln, Vliesstoffe, Partikelsysteme und Nanofasern, aber auch hierarchisch strukturierte 3D-Formkörper für verschiedenste Anwendungen verarbeitet.
