Mathematics, Master of Science (M.Sc.)

As one of the oldest disciplines in the world, mathematics has always been concerned with basic and applied research. On the one hand, mathematics is the common language used to describe structural and quantitative relationships in the natural sciences, economics, and the various fields of engineering. Using mathematical models, mathematical solution processes, and their implementation on computers, it is possible to analyse, simulate, and optimize more and more complex processes in these subject areas. On the other hand, basic research in mathematics has made enormous progress in the past decades, in turn paving the way for some very surprising applications, e.g. number theory/ algebraic geometry in cryptography. Our society thus relies on having a sufficient supply of expertise from qualified mathematicians who are informed of the various possibilities mathematics offers. In many areas nowadays, mathematics is even considered to be a key technology.

Profile of the Master’s Programme

Well-trained mathematicians are in demand at universities, other research and teaching institutions, and in the R&D departments of many companies.  Not only have they mastered tried and tested techniques and are able to apply mathematical methods, they can also pave the way for future innovations. Building on one’s bachelor’s studies in mathematics, the master’s programme Mathematics puts students in a position to develop and implement new mathematical methods and applications. This is accomplished by doing mathematics in an independent, scholarly manner in the framework of an unbureaucratic and self-paced curriculum. Advanced and specialization lectures and seminars in addition to the master’s thesis enhance and sharpen one’s mathematical skills and give one the opportunity to choose his or her own concentration from among the mathematical research areas at the University of Bayreuth. At the same time, students hone their skills in the application subjects from their bachelor’s programme.

Fields of Employment

Mathematicians have always enjoyed excellent career prospects. Those who graduate with a first-class degree will be in a position to pursue doctoral research. Demand is high for doctoral students with a research degree in mathematics, whether in Germany or abroad, whether in application-oriented academic cooperation projects with industry partners or in cooperation projects at universities in areas of basic research.

  • a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Bayreuth or an equivalent qualification.
  • For applicants from abroad: evidence that you fulfil the German language requirements by having passed the DSH examination or an equivalent examination.
