Staatsexamen Jura

Studying law the Bayreuth way.

The programme in law offers a thorough education in the three main areas of German law: criminal law, civil law, and public law. A key feature of studying law in Bayreuth is the range of innovative supplementary programmes offered in a unique form:

Supplementary programme: business and economics

This supplemental programme can be completed parallel to the programme in law is made up of courses in the field of business and economics specifically geared towards law students. Upon successful completion of the supplemental programme, graduates are awarded the additional qualification "Wirtschaftsjurist (Univ. Bayreuth)".

Supplementary programme: science and technology

Law students who are interested in technology can opt for the University of Bayreuth’s supplementary programme in science and technology (TeWiZ). The TeWiz programme provides students with specialized knowledge and practical skills in engineering.

Supplementary programme: environmental law

The University also offers a supplementary programme in environmental law. This programme is geared towards students in the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry & Earth Sciences, enabling them to understand legal questions surrounding environmental issues and to develop strategies accordingly.

First-class specialization

In addition, you can choose from seven areas of concentration, which enable you to start developing your specialization during your studies. We offer International Law ("Internationales Recht"), Intellectual Property & Competition Law ("Geistiges Eigentum und Wettbewerbsrecht"), Commercial & Tax Law ("Unternehmens- und Steuerrecht"), Labour & Commercial Law ("Arbeits- und Unternehmensrecht"), Public Commercial Law ("Öffentliches Wirtschaftsrecht"), Commercial Law, Health Law & Criminal Tax Law ("Wirtschafts-, Medizin- und Steuerstrafrecht"), and Consumer Law ("Verbraucherrecht"). Bayreuth's programme in law concludes with the first state examination, which qualifies one to work as a legal clerk.

Studying individual modules

The University of Bayreuth provides all students with the opportunity to complete supplementary programmes in theatre education or teaching German as a foreign language.  You can also study individual modules to help meet your personal and professional goals. Students can select modules from our bachelor’s and master’s programmes, take the exam at the end, and earn credits and a certificate. Further details are available from the Student Administration Office. We have put together an overview of the individual modules that can be studied each semester. In addition, students of the University of Bayreuth can take course online via the Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern, which also offers a number of courses in English.
