Special features of living in Germany

  • You will have to apply for a visa to study and live in Germany, which serves as your residence permit – you can find out more about this on the DAAD website.

  • As soon as you arrive in Germany, you must register at the residents' registration office within two weeks and inform them of your address. The best way to do this is to make an appointment online. In Bayreuth, you can schedule an appointment online at the residents' registration office (select “Anmeldung” then “Datum und Zeit auswählen”).

  • As a student, you will be required to pay a licence fee. The GEZ will contact you about this. Additional information is available at: Der Rundfunkbeitrag  - Information in Other Languages

  • Whether you choose to reside in a shared flat, your private apartment, or a residence hall, our community thrives on mutual respect and shared values. Embracing the vibrant diversity of our international student body, house rules play a role in creating a harmonious living environment. These guidelines cover aspects such as party timings, responsible waste separation, and shared property usage, ensuring that everyone can enjoy a seamless and enjoyable coexistence. Your commitment to these simple rules contributes to the inclusive and thriving atmosphere of our international community.

  • You will need your own health insurance, which can be provided by a statutory health insurance company such as AOK or TK or a certificate from them that you are covered by foreign health insurance. Details can be found on the DAAD website

  • You will enjoy wide-ranging healthcare during your time in Germany. If you come down with a minor illness (cold, stomach ache, etc.), just go to a normal general practitioner for a check-up. You will find an overview of Bayreuth’s physicians at The Health Care Region of Bayreuth. You would need to set up an appointment with a specialist or a dentist. It is only in serious cases that you would go to the emergency room.

  • In Germany, most people pay with cash or using an EC card. Often only larger shops accept credit cards. For this reason, it’s important to always have some cash on hand when you are travelling.
