The new Ecological Forecasting programme, starting in Winter Semester 2026/27, is a unique offering geared towards students who want to model, understand and actively shape ecological change.  The aim of the programme is to train a new generation of scientific leaders who can develop and critically evaluate robust, data-informed forecasts.

In the development of water‑based materials, scientists often face a challenge: water disrupts the bonds between molecules. An international research team led by Prof. Dr Alex J. Plajer at the University of Bayreuth has now developed a material that incorporates water as an active structural component. In water, this material self‑assembles into nanofibres and forms hydrogels whose properties can be precisely tuned.

With the Bavarian cabinet’s recent decision to extend the mobile phone ban in schools, the debate on how to handle smartphones in educational settings is intensifying. Researchers at the University of Bayreuth are demonstrating in the Erasmus+ project “FOCUS – FOstering Competence for Use of Smartphones” that bans alone are not enough. What is needed are didactic concepts that integrate digital devices in a meaningful and learning‑enhancing way.
