Professorship of Ecological Services (PES)

Open position as PhD or Post-Doc:

Spatial Models of Land Use Change and Ecosystem Services

The following position is available at the Professorship of Ecological Services (PES), University of Bayreuth:

Post-Doc position (100 % A13Z) for 3+3 years or

PhD position (50 % A13Z) for 3 years

to conduct research on land use change and its impact on ecosystem services.

The Bayreuth Center of Ecology and Environmental Research (BayCEER) with more than 60 senior researchers and postdocs has a strong research focus on ecosystem functions and services. Within this centre the goal of the Professorship of Ecological Services (PES) is to understand the supply and demand for ecosystem services given global change scenarios and to develop respective decision support tools. Projects are running on regional to global scales to address trade-offs and synergies between biodiversity, timber/food supply and regulating services.

We are looking for candidates to develop spatial models of land use and ecosystem services in regional human-environment systems. This research should consider global trade flows and subsequent leakage of ecosystem service improvements. The position starting earliest March 1, 2018 is initially offered for 3 years and after successful evaluation for another 3 years. It opens the opportunity to develop an own research and teaching profile (including dissertation or habilitation at the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geosciences, University of Bayreuth) while working in a team. Supervision of Master/PhD students and development of new research proposals is expected. Successful candidates can participate in externally funded projects.

The teaching load is 5 hours per week for 100% position. Teaching will be in English on spatial modeling of land use change and resulting ecosystem services in human-environment systems primarily in the M.Sc. Global Change Ecology and the MSc Geoökologie at the University Bayreuth.

Candidate’s qualifications: Strong publication record as well as methodological knowledge in ecosystem services models (e.g. InVEST, SWAT), GIS and/or geostatistics in R is expected. Since the work will be interdisciplinary, candidates holding a masters/doctoral degree in environmental, natural, social sciences and economics are invited to apply. German language is an advantage.

Handicapped persons will be given preference in cases with equal qualification. The University of Bayreuth is dedicated to increasing the proportion of women employed in science, and requests explicitly applications from women that have a master/doctoral degree.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, list of publications and teaching experience, max 3 sample publications, contact addresses of 3 referees, and one page with a statement of research and teaching interests to Prof. Dr. Thomas Koellner, Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geosciences, University of Bayreuth, 95440 Bayreuth, Germany or via email to

thomas.koellner@uni-bayreuth.de

Deadline of applications is February 20, 2018 or until position filled.

For more information see http://www.pes.uni-bayreuth.de/en or contact Dr. Koellner directly.
