Eine unzureichende Zufuhr von Mikronährstoffen wie Eisen oder Zink („Hidden hunger“) betrifft nach Schätzungen der Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO ca. ein Drittel der Weltbevölkerung. Wir arbeiten daran, die Mechanismen der Aufnahme und Speicherung von Eisen und Zink in Pflanzen aufzuklären. Dies kann hoffentlich dazu beitragen, Nahrungspflanzen mit einem höheren Mikronährstoffgehalt zu entwickeln (Biofortifikation).
